Wild Balkan terrain and a week of freeride with none of the resort polish
We're headed to North Macedonia, to the Popova Šapka area on Šar Mountain. This is the Balkans in the best possible way. The mountains here aren't trying to look like some polished Alpine resort, but they give you exactly what you came for: space, snow, terrain, and real backcountry.
This trip runs on snowcat freeride. The snowcat gets us up, and we ride down through real, off-piste terrain. Every day depends on the weather, visibility, snow, avalanche conditions, and how the group's riding, and that's what decides where we go and which lines we hit. None of that lift-run-lineup resort routine. Our day starts with the mountains, not a turnstile.
Popova Šapka is open snowfields, forested sections, couloirs, side hits, and natural gullies. It's terrain you can ride a dozen different ways: wide and fast, technical, playful, or mellow, depending on the day. If conditions line up, we push into the more interesting lines. If the weather shuts down the upper mountain, we find what's working lower down in sheltered terrain instead. We're not promising a perfect postcard day every day, but we'll get everything real mountains have to give.
We stay right in Popova Šapka, next to the riding zone. After a day on snow: dinner, recovery, talking through the day's lines, Balkan food, and a simple mountain vibe with zero pretense. And if the weather turns on us, we've got backups ready: the spa, Skopje, Tetovo, Matka canyon, or thermal baths, depending on what the day calls for.
